HAPS Seventh Graders Learn Woven Math

HOPE – Artist In Education Barbara Cade helps Hope Academy of Public Service seventh grade math students of Ms. Nina Shepherd work out the design mathematics of weaving as part of a week-long study of how math is incorporated into life in ways not typically considered.

Each student learned how to construct a hand loom and mark the measurements for accurate weaving on it; then, how to measure skein yarn sufficient for specific patterns. Students learned to use single and variegated yarn strands to create different effects in the final project.image
