Special service for Washington Methodist Church

WASHINGTON – On Saturday, October 14, Washington Methodist Church will be hosting a special service remembering the first Methodist Church building built in Arkansas in 1817 just north of Washington, Arkansas Event will begin at 10 A.M. and conclude around 1 P.M at Washington Methodist Church in Washington.

The first church structure for Methodists in Arkansas was called Henry’s Chapel and was built in 1817 when Arkansas was still considered Missouri Territory. The church was located just four miles north of Washington in central Hempstead County, Arkansas. The event will begin at 10 a.m. at the Washington Methodist Church and then all attendees will be bused to the original site for a church service at 11a.m. Methodist Bishop Gary Mueller of the Arkansas Annual Conference will give the sermon. After the service, lunch will be provided by Washington Methodist Church to all attendees at the WPA Gym at Historic Washington State Park.
