Horticulture field day set
HOPE/PRESCOTT – A horticulture field day will be held May 17 at the Southwest Research Extension Center.
The cost for attending is $17 in advance and $20 at the door. To preregister, call Sherri Pote at 870-777-9702. Registrations must be received by May 11.
The program will begin at 8:15 a.m. with John Gavin, Bradley Co. Extension Agent, talking about tomato production. At 9:30 the Ouachita District FCS agents will do cooking demonstrations and tastings for those who don’t want to go out into the field. From 9-9:30 a.m., Dr. Jackie Lee, horticulture specialist, will talk about controlling squash bugs and other home garden pests. From 9:45-10:15, Dr. John Clark will talk about blackberry breeding and give a variety development update. from 10:15-10:45, Dr. Amanda McWhirt will talk about watermelon production with cover crops. Dr. Jackie Lee returns from 10:45-11:15 a.m. to talk about tomato diseases and pests. From 11:14-11:45, Dr. Margaret Worthington will talk about fruit breeding and genetics. Lunch will be from 12-1 p.m. with the final event of the day from 1-2 p.m. a tour of the station with Clay Wingfield.
