PRESCOTT – After 18 years with the Prescott School District, Wilma Taylor is hanging up her bus keys.

Taylor has been a driver with the district since 2000 and was given a send-off with family and friends in attendance at the bus garage and a dinner including fish, fries, onion rings, hush puppies, drinks and pot luck desserts and sides.

“These aren’t my friends,” she said of the other drivers, “they’re my family. We’re not people who just work together and everyone here chooses to do this because they all love children and what they do.”

Taylor, 73, said she’ll miss being with her friends and the students, adding she has the “greatest boss in the world”, but is retiring to take care of her husband, who suffered a massive stroke. Taylor said after her husband had the stroke, the drivers, coaches and others came over and built a back porch. Not only that, they’ve helped by taking up a collection and making sure the Taylors had something to eat during their time of need.

Along with the tears, inevitable at a retirement like this, there was also plenty of laughter and fellowship.
