Fair kicks off with day of fun

PRESCOTT – This year’s Nevada County Fair will open with a day filled with fun and food.

The theme is “Wild in the Barn for Our American Heroes”, and the fair will run Sept. 6-16. However, the first Saturday of the fair, Sept. 8, will be what really kicks things off. At 1 p.m. will be “Taste of Nevada County” where cooks compete for the title of master chef. Grill master might be a more appropriate title as the cooks are invited to grill their best BBQ chicken. There’s no entry fee for this event and the chicken will be provided. However, anyone interested in showing off their culinary skills needs to enter by Sept. 4.

Cooks can also enter their baked beans, potato salad, breads and/or desserts. Prizes will be awarded to the winners of each category. All sides must arrive by 10 a.m. on Sept. 6 with the judging to be done at noon.

While the judges will be sampling the BBQ at noon, those interested in having a BBQ chicken lunch can line up at 1 p.m. when the doors open to the public to sample the dishes. The plates are $7 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under.

Once full of BBQ, patrons can head out to the fair’s festival games and fun. This will include a bicycle parade, with those participating invited to decorate their bikes and trikes. At 3 p.m. the power wheels derby will be held, along with the bicycle and tricycle races. For the bike and trike races, prizes will be presented to the top three finishers.

The fun continues at 5 o’clock with the pet costume contest, and the day ends with the talent show at 6.

Concessions will be available throughout the day.

Anyone interested in setting up a booth or game at the festival needs to call Cathy Jones at 870-796-0800. Everyone is invited to set up a booth or game at no cost. This is a great opportunity for clubs and organizations to raise money.
