Wolves blank Knights, 51-0
PRESCOTT – Prescott ended its regular season Thursday night with its third consecutive shutout.
The Wolves made short work of the Centerpoint Knights, 51-0. Prescott ends the regular season with a 9-1 overall record and 6-1 in 5AAA play. The Wolves will be home next week for the first round of the playoffs, with their opponent to be determined by the outcome of Friday night’s games. Depending on the result of the Camden Harmony Grove- Smaackover game, which was also played Thursday night, there could be a three-way tie for the conference championship.
But, from here on out, it’s a one game season, at least until early December when the title game is played.
The Wolves got the game off to a good start by winning the toss and deferring until the second half. Centerpoint returned the kick to the 28, wound up losing four yards on three plays and punting to the Wolf 28.
Five plays later Ryan Johnson went in from 20-yards out for the first score. The point after made it 7-0 with 10:05 left in the first.
A squib kick was covered by the Knights at the Centeropint 43. The Knights mounted their best drive of the game, getting to the Prescott 33 before turning the ball over on downs. For the rest of the contest, Centerpoint rarely crossed midfield, until the third period when the outcome had already been determined and Prescott was playing a lot of freshmen.
Prescott’s second drive took six plays with Derriun Thompson scoring on a 24-yard run with 4:57 showing. The snap on the PAT was high with Trey Rucker pulling the ball down and racing to the couner of the end zone for a two-point conversion. This put the Wolves up 15-0.
The Wolves were hit with an offside penalty on the kickoff, with the Knights managing to return the kick to the 36, only to punt it away three plays later.
Prescott took over at its 25 with Johnson going to the air for Quantas Gulley at the Knight 41. Johnson broke loose on the next play to the nine, where the drive stalled. Prescott was only able to gain six more yards in three plays and settled for a 20-yard field goal. This made it 18-0 with 1:18 showing.
An onside kick attempt went out of bounds giving Centerpoint the ball at its 43. The Knights made it to the Prescott 47 as the first quarter came to an end. Centerpoint managed to gain four more yards before turning the ball over on downs with 9:00 left in the half.
A holding call on first down moved the ball to the 33. Johson’s pass attempt was picked off at the Knight 42, giving Centerpoint the ball.
The turnover didn’t matter as Jacobi Nolen picked off a third down pass at the Knight 45 and took it to the house. Thew PAT made it 25-0 with 7:15 to go.
Starting at its 38, the Knights got as far as the Prescott 37 before again turning the ball over on downs.
Alex George found a gap and raced 65 yards for Prescott’s next score. The PAT put the Wolves up 32-0 with 3:07 remaining, plenty of time for the Wolves to put one more score on the board.
Centerpoint took over at its 33, went nowhere on three plays and was picked off by Keonte Franklin on a fourth down attempt. Prescott took over at the Knight 47 and needed six plays to cap the drive with a six yard run by Thompson with 1:12 left in the first half. The extra point put the Wolves up 39-0 and insured the mercy rule would be in effect in the second half.
The Knights returned the kick to the 35, gained three yards on three plays and let the clock run out in the half.
The Wolves got the ball to start the second half, with Kengku Ly returning it to the 20. Nolen took over under center and hit Kylin Haynie with a pass to the 31. Jaylon Hopson took a screen on the next play and raced 69-yards to pay dirt. The point after was no good, but Prescott was up 45-0.
The ensuing kick was returned to the 37. The Knights used most of the quarter driving to the Prescott 20 before an interception ended the drive.
Taking over at its 12, the Wolves ran one play as the third quarter ended. The final 12 minutes saw the Wolves make it to the 14 and punt to the Centerpoint 47.
The Knights went deep, only to have Jeffery Williams make Prescott’s third interception of the game at the Wolf 22.
It took the Wolves three plays to cover 78-yards, with the score coming on a 53-yard run by freshman Jacaleb Zachery. The PAT was blocked making it 51-0.
The Wolves are assured of at least one home game in the playoffs, and that next Friday night, Nov. 9. Their opponent will be determined by the outcome of the Nov. 2 games. Kickoff, though, will be at 7 p.m.
