The town of Oakhaven has been added to the the Arkansas Trail of Lights this year and has expanded it’s Christmas events. The historic town which contains the distinctive two-story homes built for officers of the Southwest Proving Grounds just prior to World Wat II has been decorating for Christmas for years. This year the town will begin with a Christmas Tree lighting ceremony November 24th at 6pm near the tennis court us open to the public and refreshments will be served. The town will also have it’s luminary event December 1st and 8th from dusk until 9pm. All the events are open and free to the public. Oakhaven Mayor Troy Lerew says every house and yard is expected to be decorated with lights and yard displays and the lights will be lit each evening from the 24th through the rest of the year. The public is invited to drive through the town and enjoy the lights often.
The Oakhaven Christmas decorations began several years ago when resident Leave Patterson began decorating his yard. The Patterson decorations spilled into neighboring yards. The Green family began decorating on the south side if Oakhaven Road and recently the Adams family moved to Oakhaven and brought their famous interactive light display synchronized to Christmas music on a low power FM radio station. Since then the town council has worked with these families to expand the Christmas decorations to all homes and yards. The Oakhaven display may be the largest Christmas lights display in Southwest Arkansas.
