The severe weather predicted for Hempstead County showed up in e early morning hours of December 1st. Numerous trees and structures were damaged by an event that could be attributed to straight-line winds or a tornado. The determination will be made after an assessment by the National Weather Service. Apparently damage started in County Road 36 in the”Battlefield Loop” area near Spring Hill and caused damage along highway 29 south over to Town Drive, Country Drive, Country Club Drive, the Gunter Edition, Highway 73, Cameron Hills, and US 278. County Judge Haskell Morse who shared these photos estimated there were at least 12 houses in the county with trees on them. As of 1pm Saturday he noted there were still power outages in the areas around the southern part of Hope with Hope Water and Light crews dilligently working to restore power. Despite the widespread damage there appears to be no injuries from the event.
