Veterans honored at Cale party
CALE – It wasn’t so much a Christmas party as a reason to get together, celebrate and have fun at Cale Saturday evening.
The nasty weather failed to dampen people’s spirits as about 40 showed up for the annualĀ pot-luck celebration. Two tables were almost literally groaning from the weight of the main and side dishes, along with the desserts, while a third held drinks. Anyone who left hungry, it was said, it was their own fault as there was ham, turkey, fried chicken, baked beans, greens, corn bread, rolls, dressing and too much to be named.
Janie Franklin welcomed everyone to the celebration, recognizing the members of the Cale City Council, the cooks, and pretty much everyone else who showed up. There were treats for the youngsters, along with prizes for the one who traveled the furthest (from San Antonio, TX), whoever shot the largest deer (an eight pointer), or who just managed to kill a deer during the season. There was plenty of fun as the “Grinch” award was handed out to two residents who qualified as Scrooges for the season. Their prizes were lumps of coal.
However, the highlight of the party, and it was a community party, was recognition of all veterans on hand. Ladies in the community worked to make quilts for veterans throughout the year, and these quilts were presented to the veterans Saturday night. Unfortunately, all of the veterans from the area weren’t able to attend. Along with the veterans, quilts were presented to the youngsters in the audience as well, especially the youngest one there.
