The Hope Lions Club conducted their annual distribution of Christmas food baskets Monday December 17th. The club compiled the baskets, took a break for lunch, and then fanned out across Hempstead County to distributed 132 baskets filled with food. The club looked at nearly 250 applications before settling on the applicants. The baskets contain enough food for a large holiday dinner plus several extra items. This year in addition to the usual frozen hen in the basket the club was the recipient of Hormel Cure 81 Hams from Super 1 Foods and these small hams were also included in the baskets. Most of the club’s members took part in the packing and distribution. For baskets going to households with children, the Hope Evening Lions provided special gifts of toys to these children. The Lions raised funds at their annual auction for the baskets. The club has distributed Christmas baskets to needy families each Christmas since 1950.
