DAR essay winners named

PRESCOTT – Students from Blevins, Prescott and Nevada gathered at First United Methodist Church Thursday where they were being honored.

The honor was from the Benjamin Culp Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and its annual essay contest. This year’s team was “Women’s Suffrage”, or the struggle for women in America to get the right to vote. This is the 100th anniversary of women having the right to vote in the USA.

Wyatt Casey, a senior at Nevada High School, and Armani Hurlow, a senior at Blevins High School, were presented Good Citizen Awards. Traci Rucker and Charlotte McCauley presented certificates of participation to students from the PSD and BSD. Fifteen students from Prescott were honored, while 17 from Blevins participated..

Georgia Estes presented the winners of the essay contest, taking the top three entries from each grade level. Students finishing third from the fifth grades were Cohen Ratcliff and Arely Dias; while the sixth grade saw Carlee Glass and Faith Cruz getting certificates. Lilly Allen was the only seventh grade student named.

Those finishing second in the fifth grade were: Blair Ratcliff and Alyssa West. The sixth graders were: Abbey Rothenberger and Audrey Lovett; while the seventh graders were: Eli Loudermilk and Aniyah Muresan.

The top finishers for Prescott were: Zayden Carter, fifth grade, Catlee Poole, sixth grade and Wilson Low, seventh grade. For Blevins it was Justin Myrick, fifth grade, Keyla Diaz, sixth grade and Summer Nivens, seventh grade.

Three of the first place winners, Poole, Loe and Myrick will advance to the state competition.
