The South Arkansas Heritage Museum aims to collect and preserve the history of the area around Columbia County. In our part of the world this certainly includes Nevada County History. The museum is actively recruiting new members to join and is offering a 25% discount on membership levels for the month of March. The museum is working to open their phyical location and has already collected a wide variety of artifacts for display including an antique pump organ to war ration stamps to orignal oil painting.
The museum members want to study, restore, preserve, and display a wide variety of objects and photographs that depict what life was like for our ancestors – how they lived, worked, played, entertained, and worshiped. The members worry that if a concerted group effort is not begun now, that we may be in danger of losing these wonderful historical items, and once they are gone, there is no replacing them. SAHM members want today’s youth to see and begin to understand what the lives of our ancestors were like when they first settled in the Arkansas Territory. As a museum, we also want to honor our brave men and women military service people that went to war in support of this country’s freedom. Lots of activities have been planned including needle work classes; cooking contests; genealogy workshops, and maybe even an old-fashioned dominoes tournament. Volunteer opportunities are available from running errands to typing. SAHM also wants to work with other local groups and residents to conduct a tour of vintage buildings and residences that have been placed on the National Register of Historic Places such as Frazier Plantation (aka “Frog Level” and the Dr. H.A. Longino House.

We really believe that our area’s history is unique and deserves to be honored and illustrated. There is no place on earth like the southern part of Arkansas, and we want to diligently work to show how others what a truly wonderful place it is.
