PRESCOTT – White Oak Lake State Park hosted their annual Kid’s Fishing Derby on Saturday, June 8. Ninety-one Kids, ages 15 and under, spent this beautiful day with their friends and families in an Arkansas State Park trying to land their “Catch Of a Lifetime.” The Arkansas Game and Fish commission stocked 515 catfish the day before the derby and park staff netted off the area to give the kids the best chance at catching fish.

“It’s always great seeing people in our park enjoying themselves and taking advantage of the events and activities that we offer” says Assistant Superintendent Corbin Merriott. “Some of these kids have never caught a fish before and to see the excitement on their faces when they hook one and reel it in, it really is a special moment for them, and for us. This is a free activity. All people have to do is show up with a fishing pole, bait, and tackle and enjoy themselves. As a state park, we exist to serve the local community and park guests so it’s always a great feeling having a lot of folks come out to the park and enjoy their resources.”

Trophies were handed out in three different age groups for Biggest Fish and Biggest Stringer and door prizes were handed out throughout the derby. When it was all said and done, over 120 fish were caught in a three-hour period for a combined weight of 84.3 pounds. The largest fish weighed in at 4.02 lbs.

This is another great event brought to you by YOUR Arkansas State Parks.
