QC enjoys short meeting

PRESCOTT – October’s meeting of the Nevada County Quorum Court was almost over before it began Tuesday evening.

The reason – almost no business for the court to deal with. Nevada County Judge Mark Glass said the budget for the road and bridge department isn’t looking good, but the county should receive around $69,000 from damage in the May storms soon. In addition, he reminded the panel the county will get an infusion of money in November from tax payments.

Mary Godwin, executive director of the Prescott-Nevada County Economic Development Office, told the court the Oak Grove community center project and Laneburg Volunteer Fire Departments have had grants approved. The Oak Grove grant is for $75,000, while the Laneburg grant is for almost $15,000.

Jamie Hillery, executive director of the Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce, reminded the panel the annual Fall Festival is this Saturday. She invited them to attend saying there will be around 90 vendors filling up the courthouse square and offering food, games and raffles.

Glass updated the court on the Cold Run Creek Bridge project. He said Ed Cross won the bid at $18,000 and has made the temporary repairs. The bridge is now open to two-way traffic, but the problem is log truck drivers are going over it fully loaded, though the court forbade this at the September meeting.

Glass said one of the property owners has said the county will need to go through eminent domain for their property. Other owners in the area haven’t responded and if they don’t, the county will also go through the process of eminent domain to use their land for the new bridge.

As to the problem of log trucks going over the bridge, Glass said the state will set load limits for the bridge and the county will try to route them around it.

Deputy Robert Missey provided quotes for new benches for the courtroom. He said new benches will cost $10,900, but if they’re cushioned, the price will be $14,097. As this item wasn’t budgeted for this year, it will be addressed next year.
