Hope School Board
By Mark Keith, 11/18/19 8:12 PMThe Hope School Board met Monday November 18th. Under the Superintendent’s report, Dr. Bobby Hart noted some preliminary data from the school-based health clinic on the Hope High campus and noted more will be forthcoming.
Dr. Hart introduced Jackie Brady of the HAPS EAST Lab. Ms. Brady noted the students are working on an online library for some old band photos which were stored at the Edith Brown campus. Several students also gave a presentation on a multi-court project at HAPS. This would include facilities for basketball, volleyball,and archery. Coach Bennett spoke about the archery aspect. The students have approached Bobo and Bain for assistance and New Millennium for a roof for the facility. It was determined the board will meet with the other partners before any action is taken.
The Cross Country Team was.on hand for the meeting. Dr. Hart noted the ladies finished in second place in the district. There are 90 students both male and female involved in Cross Country.
The Jr. ROTC team just finished an assessment and did well. The ROTC cadets brought a presentation on their goals for their unit and for the community. This included increasing their community service to 16 hours per cadet. Other goals were to help Rainbow of Challenges and helping to feed the hungry. Currently 47 students are in ROTC. One of the cadets also talked about recruitment. Dr. Hart noted all the schools in Hempstead and Nevada County have been invited to join the Hope ROTC program.
The Hope High Robotics Team gave a presentation. The students showed a robot they built in a competition out of what appeared to be a box of junk. They explained the process of building the robot.
Dr. Hart updated the board on an Opportunity Culture grant opportunity. He also talked about adding another member to the Educator’s Compensation Reform Team. Dr. Hart said in a couple of years the district will have to up it’s beginning salary in three years to $36,000 per year, an increase that will cost the district about $450,000 per year. He noted the district is going to have to figure out how to deal with that.
Dr. Hart noted the 8th Circuit is going to hear the State’s appeal about school choice. Dr. Hart says he will be going to St. Louis for that in December.
The board approved a proposed budget two years into the future and also the district’s plans for any millage increase. Dr. Hart noted their are no plans for a millage increase. The board approved the proposed budget.
The board approved a payment calculation for a teacher that is over more than 150 students.
The board approved a request to use the Yerger gym for a youth basketball program. The board also approved the use of high school gym for a Tae Quon Do demonstration.
