Spring Hill Discusses Tax for Courthouse

Another meeting on the tax proposal for the funding of a new courthouse and the containing of the old courthouse was held at Spring Hill Wednesday night. The Hempstead County JP’s spoke out to the group of around 35-40 people gathered to hear the explanation of why the county needs to pass a sunset tax ( a 24 mth sales tax of one percent).
The group at Spring Hill brought about questions such as is there a back up plan in place if the tax proposal doesn’t pass.
Officials answered no to that question and said this is a situation that “must” be dealt with and the sooner, the better.
Officials are concerned that the building could be shut down if the right people were to come inspect. The county Maintenance Technician, James Hollis confirmed that is a possibility. Warren Plyer spoke in support of the justices. Hempstead County Sheriff James Singleton said as many as 42,000 people have come in and out of that courthouse in one year. And he said that needs to be considered when thinking about the issue. “ That is 42,000 people who have been exposed to asbestos.”
