PRESCOTT – For the first five months of the year, sales tax collection in Prescott and Nevada County has remained steady.

According to information provided by Mary Godwin, executive director of the Prescott-Nevada County Economic Development Office, May’s sales tax figures were actually higher than they were inb 2019. In May, $68,168.05 was collected for the municipal tax, while in 2019, the figure was $66,052.41. To date, the city has collected $347,606.26 in sales tax.

However, the figures for the county are a bit different. Collections for May 2020 show the county had $176,488.58, which is less than what was collected in May 2019, when the numbers were $177,357.92. So far this year, the county’s tax has brought in $912,677.40.

Combined, the city and county taxes have generated $1,260,283.66 this year.

It must be remembered, though, the city and county don’t get or keep all the tax money collected. The state’s sales tax is 6.5 percent, while the county’s sales tax is 2 percent and the city’s 1 percent for a 9.5 percent sales tax rate.
