Fireworks shows cancelled

PRESCOTT/BLEVINS – As people get ready for the Independence Day holiday, many will be disappointed as firework shows in the area have been cancelled.

Prescott Mayor Terry Oliver said the decision to cancel the Prescott show was made Monday, June 22, because of the coronavirus.

Tim Choate, chief of the Blevins Volunteer Fire Department, said the Blevins event was cancelled for the same reason.

Both agreed it’s more important to keep people safe and healthy. Choate said he’s disappointed, but this is for the best.

According to healthyarkansas.gov, the infection rate continues to climb in Nevada County with 94 confirmed cases as of June 23.  Sixty-eight people are recovering, but there have been two reported deaths because of COVID-19. In Hempstead County, there has been one death, with 45 reported cases and 33 recovering.
