Celebrated Southern Gospel Quartet Coming To First Baptist Hope Sunday Evening

One of Southern Gospel Music’s longest-tenured quartets, the Songfellows, will sing Sunday July 12th at 5:30pm at First Baptist Church in Hope.  The quartet was founded in 1945 by Bob Jones, Sr.  It was originally known as “Bob Jones and the Stamps Harmony Quartet.  The group became the Songfellows in 1954 and Elvis Presley auditioned (unsuccessfully) for the group during that period.  The group spent about 50 years in California before returning to the Nashville, Tennessee area about 15 years ago.

The group has boasted some outstanding alumni including Earl Weatherford, Jim Waites, and Rick Strickland who currently is in the group.  The son of the group’s founder, Bob Jones, Jr., grew up with the group and still leads it.

First Baptist Church features a large sanctuary and social distancing will be easy for those who plan to turn out for the concert.   The program is free although a love offering will be taken.  If you have questions you may call the church at 777-5757.  First Baptist is the red brick church located at 3rd and Main in downtown Hope.  The public is invited.
