ROSSTON – A new water operator was introduced at the September meeting of the Rosston City Council Monday evening.

Derek Sisk of Emmet was hired when the former operator left for a new job. Rosston Mayor Dale Quarles said the job was posted and interviews held with Sisk being tabbed for the position. He added, Sisk will have an assistant.

Otherwise, it was boilerplate business as usual for the council. Quarles said he’s working on the 2021 budget and won’t be making many changes from last year as that budget worked out fairly well for the community. He reminded the panel the city upgraded its computer system and plans to purchase a check writing printer that’s compatible with it. Quarles said technology changes and the city has to keep up with it, adding this isn’t a major investment.

He talked about the baseball park now belonging to the City of Rosston and how plans are to make it more of a recreational area and not just for baseball. The idea, he said, is to have more than just one thing there, but it can include a baseball field. He will be meeting with Mary Godwin, executive director of the Prescott-Nevada County Economic Development Office on Sept. 25 to discus what can be done with the property and how planned projects can be funded.

“I’m looking at more recreation,” he said, “but this doesn’t exclude baseball. I’m looking to accommodate everybody.” Quarles said the city is seeking input from Rosston residents on what they’d like to see at the park, adding nothing is etched in stone at this time.’

Quarles’ goal when he took over as mayor was to increase the budget to $300,000 this year. The city got close, making it to $282,000, but had some unexpected issues with the water system that had to be dealt with, including a blowout and valve repairs. He talked about how there’s been some meter malfunction, but residents are paying their water bills better. This, he added, is because the meters are shut off if the bills aren’t paid.

Overall, he said, the city is doing pretty good.
