Wolves host Owls in AAA quarterfinals

PRESCOTT – Friday night’s forecast calls for clear skies and cold weather – perfect for football.

Prescott will be hosting an old foe as the McGehee Owls come to town for the quarterfinals of the AAA state playoffs. It’s one and done with the loser turning to basketball and the winner heading to the semifinals. There won’t be much in the way of surprise for either team from the other. The two teams have met several times over the years, primarily in the playoffs, and each has sent the other home.

But, this isn’t  the only game set for Friday night. Harding Academy will host Booneville, Glen Rose entertains Centerpoint and Paris heads to Hoxie in the other outings.

However, those games are irrelevant for the Wolves at this time. The only team Prescott is focused on is McGehee. Both teams enter the game undefeated. The Owls are 9-0 while Prescott has a 10-0 record. Both have solid defenses and both can put points on the board offensively.

In McGehee’s nine games, the Owls have scored 346 points for a 38.4 average per game. Defensively, the visitors have only surrendered 57 points or 7.1 points per game. On the other side of the ball, the Wolves have been a scoring machine, putting 471 points on the board this season, or 47.1 ppg, while allowing 110 points, or 11 ppg. It must be said, though, other than the Gurdon game where the GoDevils scored 36 in a losing effort against Prescott, no other team has put up more than 20 and most of the points scored were after the starters were taken out of the game.

One thing’s for certain, fans will be in for a treat Friday night when the whistle starts the game and these two squads lock horns.
