HOPE – Remembering the value of being “drug free” and the man who gave his life to help students across America be free from illegal drugs was the key to the 2021 celebration of Red Ribbon Week in the Hope Public Schools.

Red Ribbon Week was created to commemorate fallen Drug Enforcement Agency Special Agent Enrique Camarena who was murdered by drug cartel operatives in 1985. The Red Ribbon worn and celebrated across the nation serves as a focal point for drug prevention education in local schools in the annual campaign directed by the National Family Partnership.

“Drug Free Looks Like Me.” was the theme for the 2021 Red Ribbon Week observance, with students in the Hope Public Schools recognizing the idea in different ways on each of the district’s campuses, Oct. 25-29.

Clinton Primary School students began the week wearing red to show they were “Red-Y to be Drug Free” on Monday; on Tuesday, bling was the thing for “Treasure a Drug Free Life”; Wednesday was celebrated in sweats for “Work it Out to be Drug Free”; Thursday featured camo wear for “Be All You Can Be… Be Drug Free;” and Friday was Halloween-themed with “Say, Boo to Drugs.”

Beryl Henry Elementary School observed “Rally Against Drugs Day” on Monday by dressing in red; Tuesday was Camo Day; Wednesday was “Peace Out to Drugs” Day in tie dye or hippie styles; Thursday was “Being Drug Free is No Sweat” in workout gear; and Friday was Halloween costumes to “Scare Drugs Away”.

Hope Academy of Public Service students went all red on “Rally Against Drugs Day” Monday; Tuesday was Camo Day for “Drugs Can’t See Me”; Wednesday was “Peace Out to Drugs Dday”; HAPS supported Breast Cancer research and Red Ribbon Week with “Pink Out Day” on Thursday; and Friday was Halloween-themed to “Say Boo to Drugs.”

Yerger Middle School and the Creative Action Team School had “Shade Out Drigs” on Monday; “Put a Cap on Drugs” Tuesday; were “Ready to be Drug Free” on Wednesday; were ready to “Sock It to Drugs” with silly/mismatched socks on Thursday; and wanted to “Be a Jean-ius, Be Drug Free” by wearing jeans on Friday.

Hope High School students observed “Jersey Day” on Monday; went “Twins” on Tuesday; showed college colors on Wednesday; went “Pink Out” on Thursday and showed school spirit against drug use on Friday.
