Wolves handle Lions 50-19
JESSIEVILLE – Prescott remains undefeated with a 50-19 win over the Jessieville Lions Friday night.
The game, though, was closer than the final score would indicate. With the exception of the Wolves managing to stop the Lions potent running game twice, and forcing a pair of fumbles, the Lions played even with Prescott.
The Wolves are now 9-0 on the season and 6-0 in 5AAA play with one game left in the regular season as Prescott will host the Glen Rose Beavers Nov. 5 at Cummings Stadium.
Jessieville played its game from start to finish. The Lions worked the clock, making sure Prescott’s offense was on the sideline with limited opportunities to score. It didn’t matter. With the exception of Prescott’s final possession, with 1:20 left in the game, the Wolves scored on every offensive possession, adding a kickoff return for a touchdown as well.
While this may seem a bit of an oddity, neither team punted in the game.
Jessieville kicked off, recovering an onside kick at the Lion 49 after Prescott bobbled the ball. Four plays later, Prescott took over at the Wolf 46.
The Wolves needed six plays to go 54-yards, with Carston Poole finding Eric Grigsby with a seven-yard scoring pass. The try for two was no good, but Prescott was up 6-0 with 7:22 left in the opening frame.
The kick was returned to the 26, with the Lions passing once in an 11-play drive. The score came on a one-yard plunge with 22 ticks to go. The point after gave Jessieville the only lead the home team would have in the game at 7-6.
Another onside kick attempt was recovered by Jerry Glass at midfield. The next play ended the first period with the Wolves at the Lions 47. Poole found Omarion Dickens on the next play for a 47-yard touchdown. The try for two made it 14-7 with 11:50 left in the half.
The Lions set up shop at the 30 and drove 70 yards in 10 plays, scoring on a 26-yard strike with 5:51 showing. The PAT was no good, leaving the score 14-13 in Prescott’s favor.
A squib kick set the Wolves up at the Prescott 47. Four plays later Jaylen Hopson broke free for a 19-yard score. The try for two was no good, with the score now 20-13 with 4:47 left in the half.
The Lions started at the Jessieville 31 and drove to the Prescott 20 in 11 plays before coughing the ball up as the buzzer sounded ending the half.
Since Prescott received to start the game, the Lions got the ball to start the second half. The kick was returned to the 41. Jessieville drove to the Prescott 46 before turning the ball over on downs.
Lightning struck as Hopson took the ball, found an opening and raced 54-yards for the touchdown. The two-point conversion made it 28-13 with 8:50 showing. This was as close as the Lions would get.
Starting at the Lion 29, the hosts used 12 plays and more than six minutes to drive 71 yards and score. The PAT was no good, leaving the score 28-19 and literally ending scoring for the Lions with 2:16 to go in the third.
Jacaylon Zachery fielded a line drive kick at the Prescott 20, found a gap on the sidelines and raced 80 yards to put the contest out of reach. The try for two made it 36-19 with 2:02 left in the frame.
Six penalties were called in the first half as opposed to 11 being called in the second stanza, most against Prescott for holding and unsportsmanlike conduct. It didn’t matter as the Wolves were able to overcome the flags.
Prescott was called for unsportsmanlike conduct after Zachery’s touchdown, with the ball kicked from the Wolf 25. The kick was returned to the Lion 45.
Three plays later, though, the Lions coughed the ball up with Prescott recovering at the Jessieville 40.
Poole hit Zachery for an eight-yard gain as third ended. Prescott worked the clock, running eight more plays before Hopson Scored on a six-yard run with 10:13 left in the game. Prescott was hit with three flags during the drive, all for holding. The PAT was no good, but the Wolves led 42-19.
The Lions set up at their 37, ran nine plays and turned the ball over on downs at the Prescott 29.
Prescott needed 10 plays to score its final touchdown of the game, with Branen Bradley scoring from a yard out. The two-point conversion made it 50-19.
At this point both teams subbed out sending in new offenses and defenses. The Lins started at their 43 and fumbled the ball on the second snap with Prescott recovering.
Jayce Moore was under center for the Wolves and kneeled twice to end it.
The Wolves will be at home for the final regular season game of the year on Nov. 5. This will be Senior Night as seniors in all sports and extracurricular activities are honored. Kickoff is set for 7 p.,.
