To promote International Deaf Awareness Week, Prescott First United Methodist Church is hosting a free meal and entertainment evening with inclusive hearing-impaired provisions on September 25 at 6 pm.

The congregation and its community have many citizens and members of all ages experiencing hearing loss. This program boosts awareness of the needs of a large part of their community.

Prescott applied for a $500 micro-grant from the United Methodist Committee on Deaf and Hard of Hearing Ministries. If the grant is awarded, they will use it for the dinner theater. If not, they still plan to pay for the event on their own. Church members have donated their time to make the production successful and look forward to this opportunity to share something ordinarily unavailable to the deaf and hearing-impaired.

“We are excited to offer a unique event for our community to be more inclusive of all disabilities, including deafness and hearing loss,” said Rev. Terrie Lynn Bunnell of Prescott First UMC.

During the drama, a written script will be offered to those with hearing needs and a sound system will be set up in the fellowship hall with specific sound quality for the area.

The public is encouraged to participate, free of charge. Dining tables will be set up to mimic the theme of the radio drama, which is Stone Soup. Appropriately, the meal served will be soup.

“Everyone deserves to understand what is being discussed around them. Let us share the Good News in new ways,” Rev. Bunnell said.
