FCCLA hosts coffee

PRESCOTT – Since the pandemic, the Prescott High School FCCLA has been busy.

The organization hosted a community coffee in the FCCLA room at PHS Wednesday morning, with the students talking about what they’ve been doing. Linda Benton, the FACS instructor, said February is Career and Technical Education Month, with the second week in February being FCCLA week. This year, though, all Career and Tech Ed classes were to participate in programs together, so the FBLA and ag class were involved in the coffee as well. However, several weren’t able to attend as they were in competitions elsewhere.

The national FCCLA theme for the year is “Incredible”, while the local theme is “We’re Incredible Together”. The state theme is “Keep Arkansas Beautiful”. In keeping with the theme, FCCLA students from PHS participated in a clean up at Lake Degray last fall. Locally, the students adopted Hamilton Haven as a beautification project and planted bulbs. The ag class made a swing the FCCLA students will paint and put up at Hamilton Haven.

Breanna Haddix was elected vice president at a recent district meeting, while the local FCCLA won a Community Service Award for having the most community service hours out of 15 districts. The local students recorded 7,500 community service hours.

New members were installed on Feb. 12, with Feb. 14 being Community Service Day. Feb. 16 will be College/Career Day, and the month’s activities ends on Feb. 17 with Advisor, Administrator and Teacher Appreciation Day.

Speaking for the FBLA, Club President Melanie McRoy said students went to the district competition, competing in different areas and did well with most members placing. The group is doing a fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald Foundation and working to get more people to join the FBLA.

Benton spoke for the FFA, saying the organization recently held a competition in Prescott with schools from across the state participating. Superintendent Robert Poole said students came for judging and it was a good event for the area.

FCCLA, Benton said, hosts a coffee annually as it’s a good way for students to learn to network and about public speaking.

Students prepared all the snacks for the coffee.
