DAR Hosts Vietnam Veterans Day Program at Old Courthouse

The John Cain Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Hempstead County Sheriff’s Department hosted a Vietnam Veterans Day program Wednesday on the lawn of the old Hempstead County Courthouse in front of the Gen. Herbert Jack Lloyd Memorial. The observance was authorized by Congress and March 29th set as the day of the observance. This was the 50th anniversary of U.S. soldiers leaving Vietnam and the last Vietnam P.O.W’s were released.
The Sheriff’s Department Honor Guard presented and retired the colors and Mr. Barry Haynes of the Hope Church of Christ opened and closed the program with prayer. Mrs. Bonnie Raff of the DAR gave introductory remarks and later explained the significance of the Vietnam Veterans flag along with two other DAR members. Hope Mayor Don Still read a mayoral proclamation and offered remarks thanking the Vietnam Veterans.
Mrs. Raff read the names of the Hempstead County soldiers who lost their lives during the Vietnam War. The Honor Guard then retired the colors. Following the program, the Vietnam Veterans who attended posed for the media.
