FUNomenal Arkansas: “Q” is for Quilt

HOPE – Teachers from Prescott, Spring Hill, Hope, Mineral Springs, Blevins, and Texarkana engaged in the FUNomenal Arkansas: “Q” is for Quilt professional development on June 1. The session was a collaboration between the Southwest Arkansas Education Cooperative, the Southwest Arkansas Arts Council, and the UADA Hempstead County Extension Service.

Math Specialist, Gia Falls, CTE Specialist, Shannon Puckett, and STEM Specialist, Vanessa Shelburne demonstrated the integration of Literacy, Math, Social Studies, Science, Computer Science, and Art to produce interdisciplinary learning opportunities focused on the art of Quilt Making. Teachers received three picture books, learned about quilt geometry, explored the application of DESMOS quilt lessons, designed kindness story quilt blocks, learned about the Arkansas Quilt Trail and painted a barn quilt block.

Eddra Phillips from Yerger Middle School shared an EAST project her students are developing that will provide a quilt to babies born in Hempstead County. “Many thanks to the SWAAC for the use of their gallery conference facility and supplies, and the Hempstead County Extensions Service for sharing their resources and supplies to produce barn quilts,” SWAEC said in a statement.
