Heavy Rains Cause Flooding in Southern Hempstead and Lafayette Counties

Freak heavy rains overnight caused flooding in southern Hempstead and Lafayette Counties in the early morning hours of Wednesday July 12th.  Several county roads were covered with running water Wednesday morning.  Sheriff James Singleton said up to 12 inches of rain fell in some areas of Hempstead and Lafayette Counties.  Sheriff Singleton said they responded to several stalled cars but there were no injuries.  The picture above shows Hempstead County Road 8 (A.P.Powell Road) east of highway 29 south about 10:30am Wednesday.

Motorists are reminded to not drive through water running over roads as even a small amount can sweep a vehicle off the road into a flooded creek.

The National Weather Service had issued a flash flood watch for the affected area prior to the heavy rains.
