Wolves dominate in 49-14 win over Dragons

JUNCTION CITY – From start to finish, Prescott dominated Junction City Friday night, posting a 49-14 win.

The Wolves scored on almost every possession of the first half, which ended with Prescott leading 42-7. The only time Prescott failed to score in the half was when Pierce Yates was picked off late in the second quarter. Otherwise, it was pretty much a one-sided game. Prescott is 5-1 overall and 2-0 in 5AAA play.

The Wolves won the toss and deferred to the second half. The Dragons set up shop at the 25, ran three plays and punted after losing a yard.

Prescott took over at its 39 and drove 61 yards in six plays, primarily on Yates’ right arm. In fact, the Wolves didn’t rely on the ground game at all on the team’s first drive, aside from Yates being forced out of the pocket on the fifth play as he scrambled to the Dragon 31. He hit Dwayne White on the next play for the first touchdown of the night. The point after made it 7-0 with 8:12 to go in the period.

Junction City started at its 38, drove to the Prescott 45 and turned the ball over on downs. At times, the Dragons showed the ability to move the ball on the ground and through the air, but weren’t consistent.

Yates found P.J. Gulley to open things up. Gulley made it to the Dragons 46. The next play, though, saw Prescott hit with an offensive pass interference call, moving them back 15 yards. It didn’t matter as Yates found White again to the Dragon 31. Yates had to step out for a few plays after having his helmet ripped off. DeCari Prater took over under center, carrying the ball twice to the three before handing off to  Ja’Noah Harris twice to finish the drive. The PAT made it 14-0 with 39 seconds to do.

The kick was returned to the Dragon 36, but five yards was added after Prescott was hit with an inadvertent face mask call, putting it on the 41.

The last play of the first period saw the Dragons complete a pass for three yards. Period two opened with Junction City attempting two passes and completing neither. The Dragon quarterback had a problem of overthrowing his receivers all night. The ensuing punt was downed at the Wolf 32.

Yates was sacked at the 25 on first down, hit Gulley, who made it to the Dragon 40 on second down and saw Harris gain five to the 35 on the third play of the drive. Overall, it took 12 plays with the third touchdown coming on a six-yard run by K.J. Page with 8:23 left in the half. The PAT put the Wolves up 21-0.

Prescott attempted an onside kick, only to see Junction City recover and get to the Wolves 44. The Dragons scored on the next play when a missed tackle allowed the receiver to scamper to the end zone. The PAT cut Prescott’s lead to 28-7 with 8:14 left.

This didn’t set well with the Wolves as White returned the kick to the Dragon 42. Three plays later Harris went in from the nine. John Rabadan’s kick split the uprights making it 28-7, but the Wolves weren’t done scoring in the frame.

Prescott’s defense held the Dragon offense in check, keeping the hosts out of the end zone. The Wolf offense, meanwhile, scored on four plays on its next possession, going 77 yards. Yates found Gulley for a 20-yard touchdown with 3:06 to go. The PAT put the Wolves up 35-7 with 3:06 left in the half.

The teams swapped interceptions. Junction City was first picked off by Prater who returned the ball to the Dragon 38, but Yates was intercepted at the four with the ball returned to the Prescott 48. However, the Dragons were flagged for an illegal block in the back, moving the pigskin to the 20.

On the third play of Junction City’s next drive, Talan Smith picked off a pass and raced to the end zone for a pick six with 1:35 to go. Rabadan’s kick made it 42-7 and insured the mercy rule would be in effect to start the second half.

The first half ended with Junction City running three plays, losing 14 yard and punting.

Prescott left its starters in for the first possession after the kick went out of bounds. The Wolves needed seven plays to cover 65 yards and scored after Prater recovered a bad snap and rambled 22 yards. Now, the subs came in with David Rabadan’s first extra point attempt being no good. However, Junction City was offside and his second attempt was good, making it 49-7.

The Dragons started at the 31 and made it to the Prescott 48 as the third came to a close. The final 12 minutes opened with Wesley Rash picking off a Dragon pass at the Prescott 20.

The Wolf second string offense was a bit nervous and went three and out, punting to the Junction City 48. A scuffle broke out during the punt, but amounted to nothing.

Junction City made it to the two on first down, scoring on the next play. The PAT ended scoring at 49-14.

Prescott took the kick to its 37 and basically wasted time, letting the clock run out till the game ended.

The Wolves will be on the road again next week as Prescott head to Fouke for a date with the Panthers. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
