Nashville Demonstration Organic Garden Holds Event
The Nashville Demonstration Organic Garden held an event at the Nashville Farmer’s Market Pavilion for grades 7-9 from Nashville Junior High on Wednesday morning.
After getting name tags the students learned how to make a Lufa Necklace. Gerry Wenta talked about what color Lufas should be, that they are edible when small and can be used for sponges when large and dry. The students were told that the seeds need water and heat and will grow into big plants.
Next there was seed collecting from Morning Glories which die in the cold weather. The name is due to them opening in the morning and closing in the afternoon. Morning Glories are good pollinator plants.
The last event was a cooking demonstration with fried green tomatoes. The tomatoes won’t grow any more on the vine because of the cold weather. Instead of risking them freezing they are harvested. They may ripen indoors. The Demonstrator, a nutritionist, talked about the health benefits of tomatoes due to their red color.
In all the event went well as there were interesting topics that kept the students engaged and learning. These classes take place nearly every week during the school year.
