Vandalism inflicts major damage to Columbus Cemetery

COLUMBUS – Hempstead County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the destruction and damage to 30 headstones and grave markers at the Columbus Cemetery on Hempstead County Road 35.  On April 5, Deputies were notified regarding the vandalism.

20 headstones were knocked over and some 17 monuments were broken, estimates to repair and replace the heavily damaged monuments are near $50,000. There was also damage to the ground as a pick-up discovered at the cemetery left deep ruts and was stuck near the gazebo. Investigator’s have determined the owner of the vehicle and are obtaining warrants for a suspect believed to be responsible for the damage.

The incident is still under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and further information will be forthcoming.
