Gary Wayne Ward, 74, of Hope, Arkansas, passed away on May 28, 2024. Born on March 6, 1950, in Dallas, Texas, Gary grew up in Mesquite, Texas, where he was captain of the Mesquite High School football team and was voted “Mr. Skeeter 1968” by his senior class.

Gary earned his bachelor’s degree from Stephen F. Austin State University and was an active member of the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity, in which he held several offices. Following college, Gary joined the Air Force, serving for two years before transitioning to a career in the plumbing supply industry.

A man of many passions, Gary was an avid reader, music lover, and travel enthusiast. He had a deep-seated wanderlust, enjoying trips both near and far, from local outings to Hot Springs, Arkansas, to international adventures like visiting Stonehenge and embarking on the Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour in the UK.

Gary was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jean “Kay” Ward, in December 2023, and his mother, Doris Ward. He is survived by his father, Denver Ward, 96, of Hope, Arkansas; his daughter, Jacey Zuniga, and her husband Stacey of Austin, Texas; and his cherished grandsons, Nico Van and Bear Zuniga; his sisters, Susan Ward Minter and her husband Brian of Celeste, Texas, Dena Brown and her husband Jack of Aubrey, Texas, and Wendy Ward of McKinney, Texas; Stepsons William Joshua Thompson of Lancaster, Texas and Steven & stepdaughter-in-law Ember Thompson of Forney, Texas along with their children Katelyn, Christopher, Terah, Tate, Torin, Truston, and Truett.

Known for his storytelling, Gary delighted in sharing his experiences and knowledge, infusing his tales with wit and vibrant details, whether recounting his travels, concerts he attended, or moments with his family and friends. His favorite saying encapsulated his zest for life: “You learn something new every day if you just get out of bed.”

A memorial service to celebrate Gary’s life will be held at a later date.

Gary’s legacy of love, laughter, and learning will be cherished by all who knew him.
