Nevada School Board

The Nevada School District held its annual report to the public as well as its monthly board meeting in the High School Library on Thursday (9-26). Highlights from the annual report included the staff,24 certified staff members in the Elementary School and 17 in the High School with 11 holding Master’s Degrees..There’s also a counselor each for both schools, paraprofessionals and interventions. Both schools are accredited.
The Elementary goals include intensive reading (K-6) and math (3-6) interventions as well as increasing both student and parent engagement. Activities for students are pee wee Basketball, shooting sports, quiz bowl, and battle of the books.
The high school reviewed the budget plans for the district, federal programs, gifted and talented, English as a second language, and special education. The high school goals include testing and providing dyslexia interventions to the students that need it, providing quality professional development opportunities for teachers, strengthening curriculum by focusing on essential skills, and improving the daily attendance rate. Activities for students include basketball, baseball, cheer, trap shooting, volleyball, and track. Suggestions were given for parents to become more involved. These included attending parent teacher conferences, volunteering to mentor students at the school, meeting with school staff, etc. Federal funds the district receives are used for technology, paraprofessionals and professional development.
During the board meeting the minutes of the previous meeting were approved. There was no individuals or groups wanting an audience and no resolutions. For the high school students, the APEX Learning Program was talked about as was the Emergency Response Preparedness Team which includes fire safety, medical, CPR, and more.  There are 11 students signed up with it.
Fall trade day is coming up. The district is working to improve the attendance which is currently at 95.4%.
The gym floor is being worked on with a potential completion date of around December 18th. Coaches need 2 days of practice. An attempt will be made to contact the nearest district. Spring Hill might be an option.
226 is the current enrollment for the Elementary School and 427 is the total enrollment for the district.
The new LEARNS act has a lot of mandates. All new students have to be given the Cambian test. Staff has been very supportive of each other in the process. A lot of testing is being done. A lot of interventions are required.
The safety grant has been renewed. A form fence is wanted around the playground.
A “read to lead: program is being done with high school volunteer hours being acquired with it. The older students provide a role model for the elementary students.
The Blue and Gold Basketball game is set for October 18th.
Small group testing is taking place from 8am until 10am in the morning with 3 or 4 students per teacher.
A motion to approve the financial statements passed as did a motion to pay the financial warrants of August. So did motions to approve federal and special education budgets.
For personnel, the resignation of Rave Nixon (a bus driver) was accepted as was the hiring of Mike Hill for shop maintenance and the reduction of Brianna Pillard as custodian to 24 hours.
There will be a board training on October 3rd and the next board meeting will take place on October 24th.
