Blevins School Board

The Blevins School Board met on Monday (10-14).  During the Superintendent’s Report the implementation of the Safety Grant was discussed.
The High School principal reported that football season is over. The Red and White Scrimmage was set for Tuesday and the basketball season would kick off afterwards.
This Saturday (October 19th) the Fall Festival will begin at 6 PM in the cafeteria with candy and games.
It was noted Javier Gomez and Andrew Block have shown marked improvements. There were compliments from teachers for positive behavior and helping of other students in the classroom.
It was noted in the meeting that Miss Hailey does the FCLA and is responsible for the Facebook page.
ACT boot camp was discussed and there was discussion on if the students had the opportunity to see their scores. Students are responsible for choosing to sign up. Blevins had the largest group there. Those who participated said they had learned something and were ready to take the test.
Out of school suspension was mentioned and it was noted a student filming a fight was given the penalty as the students fighting, a three-day suspension.
The Elementary Principal’s Report noted the school is down 3 students. Issues between ESL and Dyslexia have been straightened out. In-school suspension totals were 13, which is up 2, while out of school suspension stayed the same.
Tara Mavis was the student of the month. She was second out of 57 students in chess and was very vocal in the Socratic Seminar class discussion.
Youth Football is winding down. There is a game on Saturday at Centerpoint and then there will be playoffs.
On the 24th, the Blevins Fire Department will be on campus to work with students.
In November there will be infant testing with Atlas.
There is a State Program on Drug Education. The approach is to keep it general and not introduce students to things they wouldn’t otherwise encounter. The idea is to make them aware and leery of drugs. Vapes might be discussed since they’re very common.
The weakest academic area is literacy followed closely by math.
There were four confirmed uses of drugs. It was said the students get them from older kids or the drugs are left on the playground.
There was no retaining of students in the third grade this last year as the scores are just coming out. A key is making sure the right interventions are taking place before retaining them.
The board went into executive session and afterwards accepted the resignation of Cindy Atlee and the hiring of Brenda Hickey. The resignation of the Zone 5 board member was also accepted.
