Adult Education at UAHT

Adult education is a necessary, but often forgotten, part of university campuses. Both campuses
at UAHT have adult education and College and Career Access Program (CCAP) classes. Adult
education classes focus on helping students ages 16 and older to review academic skills and add
new skills that are needed to successfully complete and pass their GED exams. Initially, each
student takes a pretest in several skill areas. The results of these pretests help the teachers to see
each student’s strengths and weaknesses. With this information, teachers prepare targeted lessons
that address each student’s specific learning needs.
GED classes in adult education focus on helping students successfully pass their GED exams.
However, that is not the program’s only focus. Our program includes WAGE™ (Workforce
Alliance for Growth in the Economy) employability and industry recognized certifications. All
students pursuing a GED are required to complete the first level of WAGE™ which focuses on
basic employability skills that students will need to obtain or retain employment, digital literacy
topics, and financial topics such as creating budgets, use of credit, and loans. These students also
meet several times with a staff career coach to discuss plans after obtaining a GED, possible
local job opportunities, and helpful interview tips. Students are also required to create or revise a
resume and to complete a mock interview with a career coach or staff member. These interviews
are valuable experiences because they help students know what to expect when they are called
for a job interview. The interviews have also proven to be a confidence-building activity for
students that are shy or feel uncomfortable being interviewed.
WAGE™ level two certifications focus on steering students toward one of the 16 career clusters.
A career coach helps students examine the clusters to determine what type of jobs are in each
cluster and the skills required for these jobs. Career coaches also help students choose a pathway
that best suits their abilities and interests. That choice might include attending college, enlisting
in the military, or enrollment in a targeted skills certification program. The goal is to help all of
our students develop a plan for their future. Scholarships are available for eligible students to pay
for industry-recognized certifications in a career of their choice.
In adult education, we feel that both the GED® and WAGE™ certificates are important for
students to become productive, successful members of society.
Quotes from my GED students:
Jasmine: “My favorite part about Adult Ed is that I can go at my own pace. There is just the right
amount of pressure. I do not feel rushed, but I also know that my teacher cares about my success
in life.”
Isaac: “I am ready to get my GED. At first, I was not very confident in my ability to complete
my GED. After spending time in the GED class, I believe I have what it takes to get my GED.
Dominic: “When I first started, I didn’t think I would be ready to take my GED test very soon.
After one semester, I am ready to take two parts of my GED. I am now more confident in my
abilities to complete the GED te
