Prescott City Council
The Prescott City Council met in the senior citizens center on Monday (12-16). Preceding the Council meeting was the second required public hearing on the drainage grant for repair on Hay Street. The project has been completed and the process to close out the grant is being completed. One of the council members talked about one spot draining quite well. Mary Godwin provided the council with before and after pictures.
During the council meeting a couple of people were recognized for their long service to the city. Susie Meeks is a Council Member and has helped for 26 years including some work in the public schools. Mr. Perry Nelson has been taking care of water and sewage for 48 years. In 1976 RC McBrayer, a popular gun-toting Prescott mayor hired him to serve the city. He has worked for a number of different mayors since then. Both people received awards for their long service.
The previous month’s minutes and financial were both approved.
Mary Godwin from the Prescott Economic Development Office said Prescott had received the sixth largest amount in the industrial site development grant from the state. The city received almost $700,000 (698,845) out of $10 million awarded to 13 communities. The city plans to apply for more in the future and hopes to receive it annually.
The city also wants to bring a hotel into the area and is looking for investors. Godwin said she was still trying to close-out the cleanup of yards with mowing done on Fleming Street. A lot of the cleanup involves cutting and hauling brush. 3 houses were checked for asbestos and the city is awaiting the results. This is a requirement if there is more than one house on a block to cleanup.
Godwin told everyone to have a wonderful holiday season and said the next report will be in February. Also mentioned was an engineer calling a couple of weeks ago about the old split rail property.
Prescott Assistant Police Chief Wes introduced a new police officer named Braden Cupples. Cupples told the council he was married and has three children. These include a 9-year old boy and girls that are 5 and 1.. Previously he was in construction doing dirt work. Cupples said he was always interested in law enforcement. With the recent addition of Jeremy Hubbard, Casey Autry, Brandon Ellis and Von Derrick Robinson, the police force is almost completely staffed.
The city budget has been amended. The city was said to owe $505,000 to SWEPCO although with another $1.2 million the total will be actually $1.7 million.
On December 21st those 18 and under will be able to receive gifts at 11am at the McCrary Gym. There will be food and a lot of fun activities.
The meeting adjourned.
