Volunteers Rescue Abandoned Dogs Near Guernsey

A group of both local volunteers and animal rescue volunteers from around the area banded together to rescue 14 neglected dogs in Hempstead County on County Road 15 Saturday (3-1).  According to Mike Williams of Magnolia, he’d seen a post about 16 neglected dogs near Guernsey and shared it on facebook Friday night.  When he woke up on Saturday, he’d gotten several messages from people who wanted to help.  Williams joined with Debi Pound of Texarkana, Jessica Bearnson of Nova Star Rescue, and Linda Bridges of Nevada County on the project.  They were joined by volunteers from Hope for Paws.  The animals had been reported to the Hempstead County Sheriff’s department who met the volunteers on the scene.  The dogs were in small pens and some were tied with logging chains.  Most had worms and many had heartworms.  The dogs had been tended by a person who was living in a nearby trailer who had been incarcerated and not returned to the trailer.

A volunteer from Nova Star Rescue in Russellville responded and found places for the dogs at their facility.  14 dogs were rescued.  They are being treated and will hopefully recover from their illnesses.

The incident is being investigated by the Hempstead County Sheriff’s Department.
