HOPE – Hempstead County Sheriff James Singleton has announced the promotion of Deputy Matthew Dunham to the rank of Patrol Sergeant, effective August 1, 2025.

Sergeant Dunham, an eight-year veteran of the Hempstead County Sheriff’s Office, has most recently served as the School Resource Officer (SRO) at Spring Hill Schools. His dedication to the safety and education of the youth in our community has been exemplary, and he has earned the respect of students, staff, and fellow deputies alike.

In his new role as Patrol Sergeant, Dunham will be responsible for the day-to-day supervision of the Patrol Division, ensuring professional, effective law enforcement coverage throughout the county. In addition to overseeing patrol operations, Sergeant Dunham will also take on the leadership and coordination of the Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer Program, continuing to strengthen the department’s relationship with local schools and districts.

“Sergeant Dunham has demonstrated a strong commitment to community policing, school safety, and public service,” said Sheriff Singleton. “His leadership skills and law enforcement experience make him a valuable asset to our supervisory team.”
