Cortez Brown Crowned Champion at Hope Watermelon Festival ‘s Juiciest Event

Hope, AR — August 9, 2025 The 49th Annual Hope Watermelon Festival delivered another slice of summer fun on Saturday with its beloved Watermelon Eating Contest, held at the Southwest Arkansas Regional Medical Center Stage in Hope Fair Park. The event drew a lively crowd of spectators and participants eager to celebrate one of the festival’s most iconic traditions. Competitors were divided into three age categories: 0–7, 8–16, and 17 and up. Each group battled it out for top honors, devouring thick slices of Hope’s famous sweet watermelons in a race against the clock.

In the 0–7 age group, young Brandon Jones stole the show with an enthusiastic and speedy performance that earned him first place. The 8–16 division saw Wrighley Lee emerge victorious, showcasing both technique and determination.

The 17 and up category was dominated by Cortez Brown, whose impressive pace and clean finish not only secured him the top spot in his division but also earned him the coveted title of Overall Grand Champion. Brown’s win was met with cheers from the crowd, as he celebrated with a triumphant watermelon-stained smile. “It’s all about rhythm and focus,” Brown said after the contest. “And loving watermelon doesn’t hurt either.”
