Community Emergency Response Team at Nevada

The Nevada County Office of Emergency Management would like to recognize the new Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) that the Nevada School District took advantage of. Starting their (CERT) team which will aid in a variety of medical emergencies, natural disasters and fire related emergencies. All students had to undergo training from first aid splinting, stop the bleed, the use of an AED and CPR, to fire and rescue training such as use of a fire extinguisher, evacuation, and shelter in place techniques. Besides the school having hands on training with the students, they will also benefit by having a lowered insurance rate. The students receive community hours, life skills, and could possibly help guide them in the direction of emergency services in their future. This program will likely be mandatory for schools in the coming years, but because Nevada Schools volunteered, they received free training and gear for their efforts. Stacy Cornelius and Lindsey Casey, the (CERT) team leaders, will continue to work with new students and current students as they continue to move up in grades as they graduate. The (CERT) team consists of Zette Brown, Ayana Henry, Treashawn Heard, Alyssa Collins, Zoe English, and Cameron McClendon. The (CERT) is an Arkansas State Program for improving education and school safety and is led by The Arkansas Department of Emergency Management (ADEM) and the Nevada County Office of Emergency Management (NCOEM). CERT is a new program and there are only a hand full of (CERT) teams throughout the state and Nevada Schools are the only team within Nevada County at this time. Once this program is made mandatory more schools should follow.
