Hempstead County Sheriff’s Office taking action against motorists passing stopped school buses

HEMPSTEAD COUNTY – The Hempstead County Sheriff’s Office is issuing a strong warning to motorists regarding the illegal and dangerous practice of passing stopped school buses while they are loading or unloading students. Recent reports have indicated an increase in these violations throughout the county, creating serious safety risks for children.
In response, the Hempstead County Sheriff’s Office will begin assigning deputies to ride along on school buses and will place additional patrol units in school zones and along bus routes. Deputies will be actively monitoring for motorists who disregard school bus stop arms and flashing red lights.
Sheriff James Singleton stated, “The safety of our children is our top priority. When a school bus stops to load or unload students, the law is clear: drivers in both directions must stop. There are no excuses for endangering a child’s life by failing to obey this law.”
Motorists caught passing a stopped school bus face significant fines, possible license suspension, and other penalties under Arkansas law. The Sheriff’s Office urges all drivers to stay alert, slow down, and exercise patience in school zones and near bus stops.
“We’re asking the public to do their part,” Sheriff Singleton added. “Put away distractions, watch for flashing lights, and always stop for school buses. A few seconds of your time could save a child’s life.”
