Janis Lee Brockman Riley
Janis Lee Brockman Riley, age 80, was born July 2, 1945, in Prescott, AR. The only child of Melton and Corrine Turner Brockman. She grew up on Brockman Hill in Bodcaw, AR, behind the store that her parents owned and operated. She loved spending time with her grandparents and cousins nearby. Janis moved with her parents to Stamps, AR in the 7th grade.
As a teenager, she loved to play the piano, go to Stamps Yellowjacket football games, go roller skating and to the movie theater. Janis accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior during a revival meeting at Corinth Baptist Church. She was baptized at Calvary Baptist Church in Stamps and was the church pianist at Calvary during her teen years. In 1963 Janis graduated from Stamps High School and on June 30, married Jim Riley, whom she had known her whole life. They moved to Chicago, Illinois where both of their children were born.
For 60 years Janis and Jim were never apart on their anniversary date. After returning to Arkansas in the 1970’s, Janis led and was pianist for The Singing Corinthians, a group of teenagers who traveled in a green and white bus to sing in many nursing homes and churches. In the early 1990’s Janis and Jim moved back to Stamps to be near her parents and Janis was again involved in choir music and taught a teen class at Calvary. During her life Janis worked chicken houses, sold real estate in Shreveport, kept books for Jim’s business, worked at Kmart in Las Vegas, and at Flower World in Stamps. She spent several years incubating, hatching, and raising emu and ostrich on the farm near Bodcaw, where she and Jim retired.
Everyone loved Mrs. Janis. She was an excellent listener who counseled many family and friends. Janis was a devoted Wife, Mother, and Mamaw. Her greatest joy was her family.
Janis was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jim Riley, and granddaughter Caroline Riley. She is survived by her daughter Karen (Mark) Bridges of Magnolia, son Kevin (Amy) Riley of Bodcaw, Grandchildren Megan (Caleb) Bennett of Stamps, Kelly Bridges of Magnolia, Joseph Riley of Hutchinson, KS, Kimberly (Caney) Hicks of Bodcaw, Great grandchildren Elizabeth and Gracelyn Bennett, Wrenley Bridges and soon to be born Christopher Hicks.
