
Hempstead County voters have approved a 1 cent sales tax to be collected for two years to fund the renovation of the Farmers Bank building downtown for use as a courthouse. The final results showed 1,439 people voted for the 1 cent sales tax with 1,204 voting against. That breaks down to 54.45 percent voting for and 45.55 percent voting against. Collection of the tax will commence in July and will continue until July of 2022.
There were a total of 2,705 ballots cast in the county with 996 voting in the Democratic primary and 1,645 voting in the Republican primary. In the Democratic presidential primary, the top vote getter in Hempstead County was Joe Biden with 548 followed by Micheal Bloomberg with 149 and Bernie Sanders with 128. There were eighteen Democratic contenders on the ballot including several who had dropped out by Tuesday’s voting. In the Republican presidential primary, Hempstead County voters went strongly for President Trump with 1,610 votes cast. Rocky De L Fuente and Bill Weld polled 27 votes together.
In the race for State Supreme Court Associate Justice Position 4, Hempstead County polled 1,566 votes for Barbara Womack Webb against 1,034 for Judge Morgan “Chip” Welch. For Court of Appeals Associate Judge District 4, Hempstead County voted for Stephanie Potter Barrett with 1,447 votes compared to 1,151 for Emily White.
The ballots were counted by 10pm.
