Spring HIll Bears Hosting State Final Friday For 8 Man Football
The Spring Hill Bears are playing for their first-ever state championship Friday night in Spring Hill. According to Coach Greg Smith, “we play in the 8 man football league which is a new league in the state. We have our state championship game on week 10 and…that’s Friday. We’ve qualified for the state championship, we beat Rector last week in the semi-finals”. Coach Smith said they were hosting because they were the one-seed team. “We’ll be playing Mountain Pine from the Hot Springs area for the state championship,” according to the Coach. He said the crowd will be spaced and will need to wear their masks.
Coach Smith said 8 man football is a new concept for the smaller schools and has worked well for the districts like Spring Hill that have sometimes been challenged to field an 11 man team. He sad the playing field is narrowed in width with the length of the field being the same. There’s a 16 team league within the state.
Spring Hill goes into the game with a 5 and 2 record. Coach Smith says “we’re proud to be in the finals and we hope everybody comes out to see these kids do what they do. They’ve worked hard and we’re very proud of them”.
