Ground broken for new PES

PRESCOTT – Ground was broken Wednesday afternoon for the new Prescott Elementary School.

While there was a good  crowd to watch the event, dignitaries weren’t featured in the actual breaking of the ground. Instead, the Prescott School District chose to select a group of students from the current PES to do the groundbreaking. The children were given t-shirts with the year they’re to graduate, along with hard hats and set to work. While the adults present, and assisting with the groundbreaking, stopped after one spade full, the youngsters had fun digging and playing in the dirt.

Once this was done, they enjoyed snacks provided by C. R. Crawford, the construction company building the new facility.

Superintendent Robert Poole thanked everyone for coming and said this wouldn’t have been possible without their work in passing a millage increase for the district. He said it was past time a new elementary school was built for the children of Prescott, and this is being done for the students. “We’re excited to get this project started, it’s well overdue.”

Justin Reeves will be the project manager, while Teddy Mitchell will be the project superintendent. Both worked on the Prescott Junior High School project as well. The new PES will take 18-20 months to complete. Once it’s done, the current PES will be razed and converted into a parking lot. However, before work on the new school can start, the utility lines in the area will have to be buried by the city.
