Wolves stop Beavers, take 5AAA crown
GLEN ROSE – They came, they saw, they conquered.
Prescott’s Curley Wolves made the trip to Glen Rose Friday night in a fight for the 5AAA conference title and a perfect regular season. Normally, it’s tough to pull off a win against the Beavers at home, but the Wolves posted a 42-14 win to go 8-0 on the season and 6-0 in league play.
The Wolves will have next Friday off as the AAA state playoffs begin. Prescott will be at home for the first game on Nov. 20, with their opponent to be determined.
Prescott got off to a quick start, putting 21 points up in the first period. The inaugural touchdown coming early in the game. Glen Rose answered with a tying score on its first possession, as a seven play drive was capped off with a 21-yard touchdown pass.
After that, it was all Wolves, though Prescott have to punt on its second possession, giving the Beavers the ball at their 33. It didn’t matter as Glen Rose turned the ball over on downs as a fake punt on fourth down was stopped at the Prescott 47.
Then, the flood gates opened. Jaylen Hopson took a hand off from Jacobi Nolen and raced 53-yards for the score. The point after made it 14-4 and the Wolves never looked back.
Glen Rose did nothing with its next possession, but the Wolves scored on a Nolen to Caleb Harris pass to go up 21-7 on Prescott’s next offensive series.
Glen Rose started at its 33, ran three plays and saw the first quarter come to an end.
The second quarter began with the two teams unable to do much offensively until Prescott’s second possession after recovering a fumble at the Beaver 37. It took five plays before Nolen rambled in from 22-yards out. The extra point put the Wolves up 28-7 with 5:00 left in the half.
Glen Rose took over at its 31 ran three plays and punted to the Prescott 18.
Nolen as picked off on second down, with the Beavers taking over at the Wolf 14.
Prescott’s defense stiffened and shut Glen Rose down, yielding but a yard on four plays with 1:38 showing.
The Wolves went to the ground game with Alex George gaining 15, followed by Nolen picking up 12. Both teams took a time out with 0:42 to go with the Wolves facing a second and 10. Nolen went to the air, finding a wide openĀ Hopson for six. The PAT put the Wolves up 35-7, where the score was at the end of the half.
Glen Rose got the ball to start the second half, setting up shop at its 38 and driving to the Prescott 47 before Jacaylon Zachery picked off a pass at the 22.
The Wolves drove to the Glen Rose five before turning the ball over on downs. The Wolves’ drive took 13 plays and chewed time off the clock.
On the Beavers’ fourth play, a pass attempt was tipped, with Travion Dickens coming down with it at the Glen Rose seven. Three plays later Nolen hit Harris for six. The extra point was the icing on the cake as the mercy rule came into play with the score 42-7.
The kickoff ended the third quarter with Glen Rose starting from its 41. The Beavers kept the ball most of the fourth period, driving 59 yards in 11 plays with the help of penalties. The Beavers’ final score came on a seven-yard pass. The extra point made it 42-14.
Prescott took over at its 39 and ran two plays as time ran out.
