Fore of a Kind BBQ open for business
PRESCOTT – Ribbon cutting ceremonies were held for Fore of a Kind BBQ Monday morning.
The business is owned by Kendrick and Abby Fore, and there’s a family history with its location. At one time, the BBQ restaurant was a grocery store owned by Abby’s grandmother’s parents, so it’s basically come full-circle back into the family’s hands. Kendrick said he hopes it’s the last time it changes hands as their three sons have expressed an interest in learning how to barbecue and want to keep the restaurant going – once they’re old enough. The boys, Kash, 11, Kage, 6, and Kort, 5, will have to wait a few years before they can pitch in.
In the meantime, Steven Shubert and Mariah Jones help out during the day, while Tatum Wilson and Bonita Connor work the night shift.
The BBQ is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. until 7:30 p.m., except during home football games, when it will stay open until 10:30 p.m. The menu includes rib plates, boudin plates, pulled pork plates, jalepeno/cheddar sausage plate, smoked chicken, and the Fore of a Kind Royal Flush Feast – choice of four meats and three sides. They also serve brisket and pulled pork sandwiches, along with hamburgers. They also have nachos and fries, salads, a kids menu and meat by the pound.
Kendrick said he started barbecuing around 12 yeas ago and was asked to BBQ a rack of ribs. He did and posted it on Facebook. Next came a request for him to BBQ two racks of ribs and, eventually, it snowballed. In 2015, he said, he and Abby decided their dream was to own a BBQ restaurant and the work began. Oddly enough, while many were hurt by the Covid crisis in 2020, he called it a blessing, saying they were able to pay off some bills and open the restaurant debt free. The building has cleaned inside and out and given a new paint job, with a cage for the smoker’s firewood.
Opening hasn’t been without problems as the credit card machine isn’t working, though they can accept debit cards, and cash is always welcome. And the soft drink machine doesn’t work, either, but this will soon be corrected.
Right now, he said, the biggest sellers are the brisket, pulled pork, chicken, ribs and pork belly burn in.
There’s something different about Fore of a Kind – sidewalk chalk on every table. Kendrick said they wanted to do something different and while other restaurants have paper and crayons on tables, they decided to go with the chalk. “We’ve had some good artists in here,” he said. Pictures are taken of the table art and put on a Facebook page.
In talking about the restaurant, he said, “we just want to be a BBQ place, and offer the best quality we can. We’re not looking to be anything fancy.”
Jamie Hillery, executive director of the Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce, welcomed them to the community saying everyone’s excited a BBQ place has opened, adding it’s good BBQ.
Prescott Mayor Terry Oliver chimed in saying he’s glad they chose to locate in Prescott because they could’ve gone anywhere in the state. He said people will be coming to Prescott wanting them to move to their communities. He urged everyone to come out and support local business.
“Thank for coming out,” Kendrick said, “and supporting us. We hope you’ll keep coming back.”
When asked about the name of the business, he said it was basically for him and the three boys, as all of their names begin with the letter “K”. The old logo was Four Kings and an Ace, also for the first letter of their first name.
