Wet course, wind don’t hamper EDO tourney

PRESCOTT – After a two year hiatus due to Covid-19, the Prescott-Nevada County Economic Development Office held it’s Business and Industry Appreciation Golf Tournament at the Prescott Country Club.

The 15-teams that hit the links had fun, in spite of the windy conditions. There were four teams in the morning flight, which was won by  Farmer’s Bank and Trust with a score of 59, and 11 teams in the afternoon flight, won by Tyson with a 58. The Bank Ladies turned in the highest score of the day with a respectable 74. Prizes were awarded for closest to the pin, going to Hank Crain; and longest drive, Tyler Doucet.

EDO Director Mary Godwin thanked everyone for their participation, reminding them this was the first time in the last two years the tourney could be held. “It feels like we’re starting over,” she said, “but there are great things to look forward to.” Firestone, she told the audience, is getting ready to hire 60 more workers as its parent company has instructed the plant to increase its output by 17 percent.

In addition, Love’s will be building a sister store across from its current location. “This is one of Love’s more profitable locations,” Godwin said, “but there’s no room for it to grow. The company bought the land on the corner to prevent competition and will be building there.” She added Hines is hiring and having problems finding drivers.

A new program is being started in the Prescott and Nevada school districts, she said, to increase the local workforce and help employers. The program will help teach students the skills they need to join the working world.

She closed saying, “We all need to work together.”

No one complained about the meals, as lunch was ham and turkey sandwiches, while Four of a Kind BBQ catered the evening fare with BBQ brisket. The evening repast also featured baked beans and cole slaw.
