Utility scam in Prescott

PRESCOTT – According to Larry Jones, with Prescott Water and Light, the PWL has discovered there is a scam going on around the Prescott area.

Someone will call and pretend to be a Prescott Water and Light representative. They will tell you that your bill is past due and if you don’t pay immediately over the phone you will be shut off. PW&L will not call and demand money.

Anyone receiving a call like this please just hang up. This is a scam and you will never get your money back.

Prescott Police Chief Ann Jordan said the Prescott Police Department has been notified of the situation. Det. Joey Grayson said this is people overseas calling Prescott residents requesting they pay their overdue light bills. These people are reportedly using cloned numbers for this and ask to be paid with Apple gift cards. Those called are told if they don’t pay, their lights will be shut off.

However, Grayson pointed out PP&L doesn’t accept Apple gift cards as payment, nor does it request them. In addition, he said, PW&L has the shutoff date printed on the utility bill sent to all residents
