Hope Lions Hear Hope In Action Program

The Hope Lions heard a program on Hope In Action on Monday. He thanked the Lions for what they do for the orgranization.
Henley noted Hope In Action started in 1986 as the Hempstead County Resource Council under the ministerial alliance. Henley said the churches in the ministerial alliance were bombarded with requests for help and wanted to set up one organization all the churches could support. He noted he moved for the new name “Hope In Action”.
An old tourist court, the Kane Courts, was purchased on West Third. Henley said they purchased the tourist court in the 80’s thanks to funds raised by “Hands Across America”. Hope In Action #2, the old migrant center, is leased from the city for $1 per year. Henley said they’ve paid their lease for the next 100 years! #2 also incluedes some FEMA trailers and a large building donated from New Millennium. Hope In Action#2 also has a kitchen to feed those staying there. Much of this is funded by grants from HUD. He noted these grants are really needed as the utility bills at #2 average $5,000 per month. Henley said they are able to use their vounteers’ hours as part of the match for these grants.
The Lions also heard from Mae Dulaney, Helen Byers, Stephanie Gee, and Craig Thomason.
